My last blog is from the beginning of January and I wrote about the spring weather we had in that weekend. I shouldn't have done that because I must have jinxed things. It's the end of February now and there is almost half a metre of snow outside. Since January we had several periods with… Continue reading Digging through the snow, in search for spring

Cycling against a hairdryer
In the Netherlands wind is wind. And in winter the wind is always chilly. In my mother tongue a föhn is a hairdryer. Here in Slovenia a föhn (fen) is a wind from the mountains and that wind is always warm. In winter it can make snow disappear with the blink of an eye, in… Continue reading Cycling against a hairdryer
Foggy spectacle on Pokljuka
Slovenia got two new heroes this winter. Alpine skier Tina Maze and biathlete Jakov Fak. While Maze flew to her 5th win in the giant slalom in the French Courchevel, I saw Fak slide to a second place in the 15 kilometre race of the biathlon world cup in Pokljuka in Slovenia. We Dutch have… Continue reading Foggy spectacle on Pokljuka
Take a hike
,,Soft legs’’, my girlfriend shouted behind me. And ‘take small steps’. I didn't really know what to think of it, but this was the advice I had to make due with when slipping and sliding down the mountain Grmada on Sunday. We went for a hike up and down the 898 meter high peak near… Continue reading Take a hike
A protest gone bad in Ljubljana – The revolt continues
A mass demonstration against the Slovenian political elite in Ljubljana ended in riots when hooligans took the stage. Thousands of Slovenians came to the centre for a peaceful protest on friday evening. The situation went from grim to violent after dozens of hooligans turned up after two hours of protest.
Trouble in paradise – Revolt in Slovenia
(Nederlandse versie en foto's onderop) Winter is about to begin and in Slovenia things are heating up. After a protest in the second largest city Maribor gone wild on Monday evening, people took the streets of capital Ljubljana yesterday evening in a wild protest. More demonstrations are expected in the coming days and weeks. Trouble… Continue reading Trouble in paradise – Revolt in Slovenia
Plain and simple
It's funny, I emigrated 1300 kilometres to the south to a completely different country but I still live next to wetlands. The Zaanstreek, the Dutch region where I am from is surrounded by wetlands. It's protected nature that I know very well because I always used to ride my bike through and around it. Here… Continue reading Plain and simple
8 – And the man in tights
,,They are dancing on the table in the other room’’, my girlfriend said. I couldn’t believe it but when I went to take a look I saw a stable full of people that were singing, screaming and dancing to the brisk tunes of traditional Slovenian Oberkrainer music. Osmice (eights) is much more than a culinary… Continue reading 8 – And the man in tights
Recordhouders kaarsje branden – Recordholders candle lighting
Continue reading Recordhouders kaarsje branden – Recordholders candle lighting
A marathon in the snow
It really happened. On this sunday in late October Slovenia woke up under a blanket of snow. It was cold, it was wet and the snowing wouldn't stop. What would those thousands of participants of the Ljubljana Marathon have thought when they looked out of the window this morning? They had 10, 21 or 42… Continue reading A marathon in the snow
